We are a world-wide network of dedicated Rotarians who have a passion for providing our Exchange participants with a truly life-changing experience that promotes world peace. The safety of our students is of paramount importance.
Why Rotary Youth Exchange?
For over 75 years, students and host families have broadened their horizons through Rotary Youth Exchange. More than 80 countries and over 8,000 students each year participate in the program, which is administered at the regional level by Rotary districts and at the local level by Rotary clubs. Rotary Youth Exchange Students are known throughout the world as Global Ambassadors for their home country that can offer so many opportunities beyond the year spent abroad.
What we do
Rotary members believe that we have a shared responsibility to take action on our world’s most persistent issues. Our more than 45,000 clubs work together to:
Promote peace
Fight disease
Provide clean water, sanitation, and hygiene
Save mothers and children
Support education
Grow local economies
Protect the environment
A Commitment to Youth
Rotary maintains a strong connection to youth and young adults. Besides Youth Exchange, Rotary clubs sponsor youth service clubs such as Interact, and Rotaract, youth development programs such as RYLA and offer career development and mentoring programs.
Low Costs
Rotary club volunteers administer the program at the local level, which helps keep costs low for students and their families. These volunteers often offer years of experience with students, host families, and fellow Rotarians who are involved in the program.
Our History: The Founding of Rotary Youth Exchange
Like most Rotary International programs, Rotary Youth Exchange began with two clubs. The first documented exchanges were initiated by the Rotary Club of Copenhagen in 1929 and involved only European participants. These European exchanges continued until World War II and resumed in 1946 at the end of the war. Exchanges between clubs in California and Latin American countries began in 1939, and exchange activities spread to the eastern US in 1958.
In 1972, the Rotary International Board of Directors agreed to make youth exchange an official program of Rotary International. The program is still administered by clubs, districts and multi-district groups and has grown to include more than 60 countries and more than 8,000 students each year. District 5050 has participated for many years, and continues to grow
District 5050 is a multi-district because we cover southern BC and northwest Washington. You can find a club near you on the District 5050 webpage.
Rotary brings together a global network of volunteer leaders who dedicate their time and talent to tackle the world’s most pressing humanitarian challenges. Rotary connects 1.2 million members from more than 200 countries and geographical areas. Their work impacts lives at both the local and international levels.
Rotary International strives to create and maintain a safe environment for all youth who participate in Rotary activities. To the best of their ability, Rotarians, Rotarians’ spouse, and partners, and other volunteers must safeguard the children and young people they come into contact with and protect them from physical, sexual, and emotional abuse. Rotary International and District 5050 have a strong volunteer vetting process that ensures our program is comprised of safe and dedicated volunteers and participants.
